Oral history interview with Ruth Hilliard, 1981 March 12.

Interview with Ruth Hilliard concerning her experiences as Vice-President and cashier of Farmers and Merchants State Bank in Krum, Texas and owner and operator of R & R Variety Store in Mesquite, Texas. Hilliard discusses her family background as a descendent of the pioneer Knox family of Krum, banking operations in Krum during the early 1900s, the social life in Krum during the early 1900s, and her education at the College of Industrial Arts (Texas Woman's University). She also comments upon teaching in Orange and Port Arthur, Texas, her work as an organizer of Texas Woman's University's Ex-Student Association, teaching in Lordsburg, New Mexico, the establishment of R & R Variety Store in Mesquite in 1936, and the construction of a new store. Hilliard speaks of the shortage of labor during World War II, the sale of her business, discrimination experiences as a businesswoman, her social life in Mesquite, as well as her views on the Depression, her employment at Farmers and Merchants State Bank in Krum in 1950, the bank's clientele, computerization of the bank in 1973, experiences as a victim of bank robberies, and retirement. At the end of the interview is an attached appendix that includes an excerpt (chapter 6) from "Krum, Texas: the story of a small town" by Della Isbell Davis.
